One month later when I looked at this, I didn’t remember what this is and thought it is an abstraction painting of wooden houses in a mountainous village. I could even see the stairs around them. Up until I stared at the top and it seemed to be more and more like a face, and the stairs below became fingers.
Yeah, this is a portrait. A critic said this is a “stone mask”. In my opinion this is more than a partial mask; it seems to be a complete restructure of the personality.
I have to appreciate how the art dealer himself gets to accept this painting in cubism, and how Picasso could abstract body into all these blocks. Maybe I am simply jealous of this kindred working relationship in the creative world.
Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, by Pablo Picasso, c. 1910, is currently at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Happy Edgy Saturday! I tried posting paintings in the public domain as much as possible. This one is a bit weird; it is only treated as public domain in the United States. The AIC website says this one has a copyright… maybe in France? According to the wording Wikipedia uses about the copyright situation here, where you publish the work matters. Should I care that much as an internet citizen with a faded concept of borders? Maybe yes with this. I am off on Sundays for now. See you next week!
